The day combines easy sightseeing, beautiful lake views, a short ferry crossing, local sweets, Tihany, and one of the most enjoyable wine terrace experiences in the area.
Pickup and drop-off are door-to-door from your hotel, apartment, or any preferred location in Budapest.
Balaton Day Trip Plan
08:00 – Departure from Budapest
We start the day at 8:00 AM from Budapest with a comfortable drive towards Lake Balaton.
Siófok – Water Tower
Our first stop is Siófok, at the Water Tower.
You can go up to the top for a panoramic view over the town and the lake. It is a nice, easy start to the day and a good first introduction to Balaton.
Dinasztia Patisserie
After the Water Tower, we take a short walk to Dinasztia Patisserie, which opens at 10:00 AM.
Here we can stop for a coffee and a cake. They have a great selection, and their signature dessert, Balaton Kavics — salted caramel mousse with hazelnut — is definitely worth trying.
Ferry crossing – Szántód to Tihany
Once we are ready, we continue towards the ferry and cross from Szántód to Tihany.
The ferry crossing is a short but lovely part of the day, giving you a completely different view of the lake before arriving on the Tihany side.
Tihany village and Abbey
In Tihany, you will have some free time to walk around, do a bit of shopping, and enjoy the village atmosphere.
Tihany is known for lavender products, local souvenirs, small shops, beautiful views, and the famous Tihany Abbey.
If you would like, you can visit the Abbey. I definitely recommend it, as the view from up there over Lake Balaton is beautiful.
Petrányi Wine Terrace
Around 13:30–14:00, we head up to Petrányi Wine Terrace.
This is the relaxed food and wine part of the day, with beautiful views, good local wines, and a proper lunch instead of a rushed tourist stop.
I usually recommend starting with a glass of Welschriesling — light, fresh, and easy to enjoy.
As a starter, the duck liver with brioche paired with a Yellow Muscat works really well.
For the main course, the Boeuf Bourguignon with truffle potatoes with a glass of Syrah is a great choice.
To finish, you can try their Malbec, called Ében, and if you feel like it, the blueberry chocolate mousse cake goes perfectly with it.
After lunch, we start heading back towards Budapest, aiming to arrive around 18:00.
